I always wonder what happened to drive away business. Was it poor management, an economic downturn, or did someone die on the property and the hauntings have scared off all the customers? It’s really quite sad to see such beautiful craftsmanship gone to waste in some of these properties.
Update! Blog commenter, Don Kinnier, let us know the abandoned hotel in Odessa is being renovated! And what a beautiful refurbishment it is! As much as I love abandoned places and things, I more love to see them brought back to life. Kudos to the owners who cared enough to save it rather than raze it!

Very cool historical information on the Baker Hotel and link to image source.

The Imperial Hotel doesn’t appear from the outside to be too far gone. I hope someone steps in to save this beautiful, old building. Image source.

Abandoned buildings
Made to undress
In the wilderness
See forth a cue.
Another requiem
Passes through their walls
Stripped by dust.
Wandering spirits
Roam and stutter
Around echoing voices
Left by souls
Residing somewhere
In structures
Time forgotten
Years and years ago.

I was intrigued by the image of the abandoned hotel in Odessa, and knowing nothing about the Ukraine I went to google maps, navigated the aerial view to what looked like an interesting part of the city centre, and dropped the little yellow man down. By sheer coincidence I dropped him right smack in front of this now restored hotel! What are the odds of that?

I have no idea how to calculate odds, but I’m guessing a gajillion to one? 😉 I’m so glad you commented to let me know this one has been saved! I’m going to see how lucky I am and give google maps a whirl in Odessa. LOL Thank you so much for visiting!

I see these photos of abandoned places. I still see beauty in them. And I can imagine the greatness before the images now. So much history among those walls. .

I see beauty in them, too, Sabrina. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one. Thanks for visiting!

The Abandoned Hotel in Odessa has indeed been restored and you can find it on google earth, street view. Here’s where it is: Derybasivs’ka Street at Vitse Admirala Zhukova Lane in Odessa, Odessa Oblast, Ukraine. It is located across from the town’s central park. There are plenty of Panoramio photos also on google earth. One which might be interesting to view is the hotel in even worse shape than your photo before restoration actually started. Thanks for posting beautiful images of things forgotten. I have not posted any images since Google Earth and Panoramio are copyrighted images.

Thank you for the update, Don! I copied and pasted your directions into http://google.com/maps and it took me straight to the hotel. The hotel looks fabulous and would love to see the interior refurbishment. I’ll see if I can find some in a few months. Thank you so much for letting us know!
